Ancient castles and villas, Sirmione

Day dawned drizzly but soon cleared for our venture to historic sites on the Sirmione Peninsula.

First stop was the Rocca Scaligera or Scaliger Castle built in the 13th century by the Lord of Verona as a berth for his fleet. We started at 9.30am and the tourists were already arriving in numbers. Fantastico views.

Then headed to the end of the Peninsula to see the Grotte di Catullo the ancient ruins of a Villa over 2000 year old. Great museum and interpretation. Stunning setting within olive trees overlooking a calm Lago Garda with James Bond type boats, filled with tourists, cruising below.

Mind blowing to think of the original structure given the significant size of the ruins. Lovely waking through the olives, scented jasmine and other trees. Prefect day.

Back to the narrow crowded alleys for lunch of fresh slab salad sandwich with a bowl of freshly cut fruit.

Now relaxing before a run back to the Peninsula.
