Cruising to castles and covents in Conversano

We were away by 9 am on our 30 km ride to Conversano. After navigating the busy streets of Monopoli we soon hit the stone walled lanes, olive groves and market gardens.

First stop was Polignano by the sea for one of the Puglia specials, an espressino or crushed ice coffee that really hit the spot. Great coastal views from the terraces in the old centre of town. Then a gellato, for me, from the famous Supermago gellateria - perfect for cycling.

It was a short cycle to our lunch at a cafe at San Vito on the coast. Couldn't resist a swim in the blue clear water,  our last in the Adriatic. Air dried quickly then back on the bikes for the last stretch up hill to Conversano.

Arrived at our hotel the Corte Altavilla another old Castel tastefully renovated. Showers then off for a cold drink and explore of the historic centre.

Conversano has a stunning 14th century fort that dominates the entry into the historic centre. More lovely churches. Julie and I visited a gorgeous small church in a convent. We were kindly let in by an elderly nun and directed to a small door that completely belied the ornate Chapel within.

Pasta for dinner and a bottle of the local Primitiva red wine. A walk around the Fort then home.

To Alberobello to stay in trulli house tonight.
